Many creators treat the caption as an afterthought: a few emojis and a pile of hashtags. But the caption is a second hook. People who liked your video often open the caption to learn more โ€” and that's the moment you can turn a viewer into someone who saves, comments or follows.

The first line is everything

On most apps only the first line or two show before "more". Treat that line like a headline. Repeat or expand your video hook, or ask a question that makes people tap.

Weak first lineNew video! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Strong first lineThe 3-ingredient breakfast I eat 5 days a week (recipe below ๐Ÿ‘‡)

Give extra value

A caption people save usually contains something useful that isn't fully in the video: the full recipe, the exact steps, the list of tools, or the numbers. The video makes people interested; the caption makes them keep it.

Five caption formulas

1. The list

Hook line, then numbered tips, then "save this for later". Great for teaching content.

2. The mini story

Where you started, what went wrong, what you changed, the result, and one lesson. Great for building trust.

3. The myth buster

"Myth: โ€ฆ Truth: โ€ฆ" followed by a short reason. Encourages people to comment if they believed the myth.

4. The question

Give a short answer, then ask the viewer what they would do. Simple and great for comments.

5. The checklist

Use โœ… and โŒ lines for do's and don'ts. Very easy to read and share.

Ask for one clear action

End with a single call to action that fits your goal:

GoalCall to action
Comments"Which tip will you try first? 1, 2 or 3?"
Saves"Save this so you have it next time you cook."
Followers"Follow for a new budget tip every day."
Shares"Send this to the friend who always overspends."

Questions with easy answers (a number, yes/no, a choice) get far more replies than open questions like "thoughts?".

Make it easy to read

Reply to the first comments

The first hour after posting matters. Reply to early comments with real answers โ€” or even with a short video reply. It starts conversations, and every reply is another reason for people to come back.
